My first camp was immediately fantastic!

Hello,

My name is Tars and I am 24 years old. I am currently studying film and television at Ghent University. Before that I studied French, English and history at the Artevelde University of Applied Sciences. I like sports, adventure, and travel.

A friend suggested to sign up as a Roeland volunteer in 2016. He told me about the organization and their interesting language camps, with enthusiastic participants and cool activity leaders. He was right, my first camp was a hit. Since then, I have met lots of new friends and experienced unforgettable moments.

In the beginning I volunteered to be an activity leader at the English camps only, but last year I picked the French language labs. The target language is different, but the camps are very much alike.

During the camps I am responsible for the sports activities such as football, strength and stability activities, badminton, tennis, and athletics. I also like playing games, such as real-life Cluedo.

I will never forget when we rehearsed during the day for a play we performed at night. It is always great fun to bring a project like that to a successful conclusion with a group of children. We had a great time and everyone was very proud of the result.

Enthusiastic stories

Every time we make sure to organize a field trip. This is the ideal opportunity for the children to practice the language with the locals. While on excursion, they learn about the city, the culture and the people who live there. At the end of the day, they always return with lots of enthusiastic stories.

Personally, I think going to a Roeland camp is the best way to learn a language. Roeland is known as a strict organization because the participants are expected to speak the target language. But if you want to master a new language, this is how it gets done.

Super cool atmosphere

On top of that, the coordination between the children and the volunteers is excellent. We act like a big brother or sister. We know how to have fun with the group, but we are also there for you if something bothers you or if you feel like a personal chat. We keep the mood at our camps very relaxed but evidently, speaking the target language will be required.

Volunteers wanted

Do you also want to work as a volunteer? Create your Roeland profile here. We will then contact you as soon as possible.
